Finding Windows 8 Product Key

- If you have purchased a copy of Windows 8 to upgrade an existing older version of Windows to Microsoft's new operating system, then finding the product key is quite easy.
- If Windows 8 was purchased and downloaded online from Microsoft Store or Amazon or other online ecommerce site, then the product key is provided in the email sent to you with confirmation of your purchase.
- If Windows 8 was purchased from a retailer such as Best Buy or Dixons the product key will be the DVD or the Store package. Most retailers don't these days give a media with the OS but simply a card with the Key. And you are asked to download the operating system online.
- Starting with windows 8 the product key is embeded in the bios. This avoids a major source of confusion regarding product keys. When you upgrade( or restore your current OS) to Windows 8.1 the computer automatically grabs the product key and activates it.
- If the you want to reinstall the operating system on a machine that came with Windows 8, the installation process automatically grabs the product key from the motherboard BIOS with no input from the user.
- If you need to actually get the Product Key that is stored in the BIOS, you need a key finder tool. Go to Step 3.
- Finding your Windows 8 product key with a key finder is easy. There are a number of free programs available. If you are not aware of one, try a keyfinder such as Belarc.
- Download Belarc Advisor, http://pcsupport.about.com/od/system-security/fr/belarc-advisor-review.htm a with full Windows 8 support.
- Install Belarc Advisor, following the instructions given during the installation. Run Belarc Advisor and note the Windows 8 product key displayed in the Software Licenses section.
- The Windows 8 product key is a series of 25 letters and numbers and should look like this: xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx.
