How to Upgrade Windows 8 to Windows 8.1

Problem Description:
Windows 8.1 is a free upgrade from Windows 8 that offers certain operating system enhancements in personalization, search, apps, the Windows Store, and cloud connectivity. It also improves the security, reliability, and performance of Windows 8. The system requirements for Windows 8.1 are nearly the same as the requirements for Windows 8—if your PC is already running Windows 8 then it should run Windows 8.1.
Affected Products:
Windows 8 for Desktop, Laptop, and Microsoft’s Surface computers.
Cause of the Problem:
  • Not applicable.
Instructions for Upgrading to Windows 8.1 :
Step 1 : Prepare the Computer for Upgrade
  1. Backup important files and applications that you have on your computer. The upgrade process will not replace them but it is always a good idea to create a backup.
  2. You need about 3 Gigabytes of free space on your hard drive. So make sure you have it before you start the upgrade.
  3. Make sure the latest Windows 8 updates have been installed. These may be required for the upgrade to Windows 8.1.
Step 2 : Download Windows 8.1 Upgrade
  1. Go to Windows 8 Store app, click or tap on Windows 8.1, if you cannot see the update on the Store home screen you may need to contact Microsoft or get help from a qualified technician.
  2. When you click Windows 8.1 will automatically download and install in the background. So no need to stop using your PC during this process.
Step 3 : Restart Your Computer
  1. After the update is downloaded and the first phase of the installation is complete you'll see a message telling you that your PC needs to restart.
  2. Save the work you have been doing and restart the computer.
Step 4 : Configure Windows 8.1 Setting
  1. You will be offered a list of default or express settings. If you are not technically savvy, we recommend you accept these "express" settings.
  2. You will be then asked to sign in. You can use the same Windows 8 account that you had created and used prior to the upgrade.
If above steps did not help fix your problem, you need assistance from a certified technician. Please call GuruAid at 0800 031 4181.
