Errors Upgrading Windows 8 to Windows 8.1

- To upgrade to Windows 8.1, you need a Windows update on your computer. This update is numbered "KB2871389" is required to update to Windows 8.1. So make sure this update is installed in your Windows 8 system.
- To check it, open Windows Update from Control Panel or Start Screen and check for new updates. If the update has not been installed in your system yet, Windows Update will automatically detect and download it.
- As soon as you click on "Download" button on Windows 8.1 download page, it starts the download process but after a few moments you receive following error message.
- If you click on try again button, you get the same error message again. Sometimes you may also receive error message with 0x80240031 error code.
- The most likely cause of the problem is that all the Windows updates have not been installed. There were a few updates pending for download/install in those Windows 8 computers which was causing this error message.
- Open Windows Update and check for new updates. Make sure all available updates have been installed in your computer.
- If your Windows 8.1 download failed in the middle or at the end and you were unable to install Windows 8.1 or create installation media of Windows 8.1, you'll need to re-download Windows 8.1 using Upgrade Assistant. But if you try to re-run Upgrade Assistant, it'll ask you to purchase Windows 8.1 again even if you have already purchased.
- When you purchase Windows 8, you receive an email containing information such as order number, billing address, Windows 8 product key, link to order Windows 8 backup DVD and a link to download Windows 8 installer.
- You just need to click on the link "If you need to download Windows, write down your new product key and enter it here" and it'll download Windows 8 installer on your system. Run the installer and you'll be able to download Windows 8 setup again without having to buy another copy of Windows 8.
